The Wonderfully Boring Day!
Children’s Picture Book Illustration
What inspired this concept?
The real world is utterly, completely, and astonishingly boring! Six-year-old me would wholeheartedly agree with this statement. How could the real world compete with the magical worlds you create as a child? Adult me, on the other hand, can hardly comprehend that sentiment. I never get bored, but many of my adult friends still experience this negative emotion. What changed between now and then? My mom. I would not see the world with a lens of beauty without my mother, whose curious love of learning opened my eyes to the real world's magical moments. Boredom is the tool to unlock curiosity, and curiosity is the key to unlock wonder. Contrary to my six-year-old self, there is extraordinary in the ordinary. We often just need to learn to change our perspectives. My goal with this story is to explore the power of this perspective shift by providing a tool to understand boredom in a new light through the writing and illustration of this children's book, using visual transformation, whimsical imagery, and relatable characters to speak to children and parents.
Objective.
To write and illustrate an original children’s picture book that explores how curiosity can transform boredom into wonder through storytelling and illustration.
Purpose.
To provide a tool for children and parents to rethink boredom as an opportunity for creativity, encouraging them to find beauty, imagination, and meaning in everyday moments.
Design.
The book features whimsical, mixed-media inspired digital illustrations that shift from grayscale to color, using playful characters and imaginative scenes to visually represent the journey from “boring” to extraordinary.
It all starts with ideation!
This is the beginning stage when I get to explore and play! I use different techniques for formulating my story direction and visual identity. Moodboards, physical sketching, mind maps, and writing help me discover my way forward.

I continue to expand and express the world through character design, background painting, and typography placement for visual development. My goal is to push the original concepts to find the most compelling illustrated page for visual storytelling.
World building!
After many hours, I end up with a fully conceptualized children's book dummy, including a manuscript and all illustrated page story beats. This gives me a guideline for how to create consistently in the rendering phase, where I digitally finish each image.
